Event Details:
A walking tour looking at city centre living in Leeds through the ages led by urban geographer Rachael Unsworth.
Until the 1930s, Leeds city centre was a dense mix of varied economic activity, with dwellings threaded amongst workplaces. There were hardly any green spaces and the waterways were busy, polluted trade arteries.
Thousands of back-to-back terraces were cleared in the middle of the 20th century. By the 1960s, no residents were left on the South Bank and even Quarry Hill Flats were gone by the 1970s. Much heavy industry closed down or moved to new locations, leaving empty premises and sites.
In the late 1980s some pioneering developers brought a few redundant buildings back into use as apartments. From the turn of the Millennium extensive new schemes were designed and now in the mid-2020s we’re in the thick of a third wave of city living developments.
Tour guide Rachael Unsworth carried out a series of city living surveys between 2003 and 2010. Now she’s working on a collaborative study to understand the current market and prospects for the future. Come and learn more about this evolving scene, the potential of the survey, and consider the next phase of supply and demand.
The tour will be followed by a BBQ and drink at the Lamb and Flag with opportunities for networking.
